After many years of using various brake kits on our road and race cars, Volkswagen Racing UK have chosen to commission our own brake upgrade kit that will finally deliver exactly what we demand from our braking systems.  Of course, they need to be superb quality, but also we need a kit that will be perfectly matched to the Golf-platform cars, ready to fit without any modification to the standard car under standard wheels, and capable of meeting the extreme demands of circuit racing as well as day to day road use.  And we wanted to be able to deliver this set of demands for a competitive price.

We chose to partner with Caparo AP Brakes to develop this exclusive kit for us.  Caparo AP are one of the leading brake manufacturers in the world, producing OEM equipment for manufacturers as well as extreme race and high performance specialist brakes - up to and including their T1 Supercar.  Caparo AP impressed us from the start with their technical skills and practical approach to delivering to our requirements - including their testing and quality assurance work.  The standards used for the VWR Kit by Caparo meet the durability and performance standards that they have to meet for their OEM brakes. Every caliper is pressure tested, and the quality of every element of this kit has impressed us greatly.  Have a look at the detail pictures below of the mounting bracket and bell to see the attention to detail.

In order to get the pedal feel perfect for the Golf-platform cars, numerous combinations of piston size were assessed on our road and race cars until we reached what we consider to be the ideal set-up: a firm pedal that is not over-servoed for daily use.  It is this difference that will impress you most when you try the Volkswagen Racing brakes compared to the other kits on the market which generally use a 'generic' caliper that is used on all sorts of different makes of car, and is therefore compromised.

Use of advanced materials in the construction has delivered a significant weight saving over standard brakes - and are considerably lighter than some of the aftermarket kits that we have assessed over the years.  The complete weight per side for a VWR Brake assembly is 11.96kg per side (disc and bell weight 7.04kg, and the caliper weighs 4.92kg).  The weight for a standard Golf GTI brake is around 15kg, and the larger front brakes on an R32 or Audi S3 are even more than that.

A range of brake pad compounds are in place, depending on how you will use your brakes.  We supply Ferodo DS2500 as standard, which is a very competent fast road pad that will be more than adequate for almost all uses. 

To demonstrate just how competent our brake kit is, we use exactly the same kit for our full race cars on slick tyres.  For the full race applications, the only difference is the pad we use and different seals to cope with the increased heat dissipation in race use (note that we can supply the full race kit if required).

The full kit fits under every 18" wheel that we have tested - including OEM Volkswagen Group wheels and popular aftermarket 18" wheels such as BBS, OZ and Team Dynamics.  Full dimensions of the brakes can be seen below if you wish to check against your wheel dimensions.

Another reason that we have chosen Caparo AP is that their production facilities allow us to offer a range of caliper colours.  Red, gloss black, blue, silver and green are all available (although note that there is an additional charge of £100 plus VAT for any colour other than red).  The calipers can be requested without the Volkswagen Racing logo if preferred.

Finally, our objective was to achieve all of this and still be able to offer a very competitive price.  We are delighted that by partnering directly with the manufacturer, we can offer this full kit, complete with braided steel brake lines, pads and new wheel bolts for an introductory price of £1,500 plus VAT.
