The VWR StreetSport Coilover suspension kit has been developed to suit the enthusiastic road driver who wants to make a significant upgrade their Golf or Scirocco suspension whilst retaining a good balance between both usability and performance.

From the lessons learnt from developing and refining the race-versions of the Golf 5 since its launch in 2005, we are proud to release the VWR StreetSport Coilover suspension kit to suit the enthusiastic road and track driver.

We have spent the last 12 months developing this all-new kit, an adjustable suspension system that genuinely offers the sort of quality, detailing and refinement that few of the ’aftermarket’ suspension products can offer.

BACKGROUND

A bit of background if you are new to uprated suspension systems. A “coilover” suspension system replaces the entire standard front damper and spring with a high quality, motorsport orientated unit with much more sophisticated valving inside the dampers. It consists of a shock absorber with a coil spring encircling it. The shock absorber and spring are supplied assembled as a unit, allowing us to perfectly match the damping to the specified spring rate. The rear uses an adjustable ride-height spring and seperate damper. The result is a beautifully taut, controlled ride that feels like the best thoroughbred German sportscars that are firm over bumps, but never crashy around town nor floaty or loose at high speed.

Another very significant advantage of a coilover set up is that it allows full adjustment of ride height, using a simple threaded spring perch on the threaded body of the damper. This allows the car to run at your chosen height, from standard clearance down to ground-scraping show cars, whilst keeping the same spring length wherever you set it.

THE STREETSPORT KIT

The StreetSport Coilover suspension system differs from the StreetSport PLUS Coilover suspension system in that it has non-adjustable damping rates. Through extensive testing of spring and damping rates, our engineers have established the ideal settings for enthusiastic road driving, whilst maintaining a really suprisingly good ride quality.

The StreetSport kit is aimed at fast road use, and has been developed thoroughly to ensure that the comfort is not sacrificied – in fact, it is the beautiful, taut ride quality that most customers are most impressed by when they try the StreetSport Kit. This is certainly not a track set-up suspension.

As a non-adjustable suspension kit, this is a ‘fit and forget’ suspension kit that doesn’t require constant adjustment – suiting the customer who wants to get on with enjoying their car’s performance in the knowledge that suspension is already at its optimum settings.

The kit replaces the entire standard front and rear dampers and springs with high quality, motorsport-derived units with much more sophisticated valving inside the dampers for significantly better levels of wheel control than any mass-produced damper offers.

The StreetSport suspension system transforms a standard on track, having stiffer springing and damping rates. However, if you are serious about getting the most out of your car on circuit, we would recommend that you consider the PLUS 12-point adjustable kit.

CONSTRUCTION

The StreetSport kit is European-made from strong, durable stainless steel powder-coated in satin black for durability, using a 22mm shaft and anodised aluminium spring seats.

Each kit is made to the very highest of standards, alongside full motorsport-specification suspension kits. We truly believe that by applying the standards demanded from high-level motorsport to a street suspension, there is no other coilover kit at this price-point that offers anywhere near the quality of engineering as the VWR Racingline kits offer.

SPRINGS

We have specified our own springs to match perfectly to the damping rate and car weight. These are finished in powder-coated blue with the VWR logo etched in.

VWR springs are carefully selected for each vehicle chassis’ design and weight. VWR springs are power-coated blue with VWR Logos etched in and come as standard with progressive springs. Progressive springs offer a comfortable daily driving experience on the street and offer excellent control over bumps and sudden elevation changes.

TOP MOUNTS/CAMBER PLATES

Uniquely, both VWR Suspension Systems (StreetSport and StreetSport PLUS) are fully compatible with either VWR solid Top Mounts or the standard rubber mounts. Unlike many Top Mounts available on the market, the VWR plates are a direct swap that require no cutting and are completely reversible back to standard.

Why fit them? The VWR Top Mounts offer several degrees of camber adjustment allowing the track minded driver to dial in the suspension even further without breaking the bank. This can help greatlywith turn-in on track, really transforming the front-wheel drive tendancy to understeer. Another reason for choosing solid Top Mounts is to remove the compliance in the stock rubber bushing. The feeling of directness and connection to the car is also transformed, taking away the feeling of slack and ‘rubberiness’ that can often be the case in production cars.

The downside? Well, upgrading top mounts will always increase noise to some degree. This is why we’ve offered them as an option for the spirited driver looking to maximize his or her experience with the ultimate in performance.

THE END RESULT?

A true transformation in the way that your car rides and handles. Think how a Porsche 911′s suspension behaves – taut, controlled but never crashy or harsh – and you’ll have a good idea of how your car will feel with the VWR StreetSport kit fitted. This was the brief to our engineering team – to adapt our race-winning motorsport suspension into something that would combine dramatic performance improvements whilst still delivering genuine day-to-day useability (see the picture, above, of our team benchmarking the new suspension against a couple of the industry’s best resolved suspension set ups – a 911 with PDC switchable suspension and a KTM X-Bow R). It was a tough challenge to reach – but we are thrilled with the end result.

COMPATABILITY

Versions of the VWR StreetSport suspension kits (both adjustable and non-adjustable) are available for all cars on the Golf platform: 5 and 6, Scirocco, Jetta 07 and Jetta 11, Beetle 12, A3 and S3, TT, Leon, Octavia and others.

MORE INFORMATION

The VWR StreetSport Coilover suspension kit is available for 2 and 4 wheel drive cars on the Golf/Scirocco platform. The VWR Anti Roll Bars are highly recommended with this kit too.

This kit is compatible with cars fitted with Volkswagen’s switchable ACC suspension – although it’s important to be clear that the dampers loose the switchability of the standard dampers, and an additional electronic box is required from us at extra cost in order not to generate fault codes in the car.

For information, we also offer the VWR Competition Coilover suspension kit which is an altogether stiffer set up for circuit cars, with 3-way adjustable damping rates for both bump and rebound. It’s ideal for the more track-orientated car, but it’s a significantly stiffer spring and damper rate than the StreetSport Kit. Please feel free to ask us for advice on choosing between the two.
