    VWR Uprated Engine Mounts

    Three Uprated Engine Mounts

    VWR Engine Mounts

The VWR Engine Mounts may not seem the most exciting modification for your Golf, Scirocco or A5-platform car, but really are one of the most impressive improvements that you can make. By tightening up the location of the engine and gearbox, you will instantly feel the difference the first time you pull away.

An essential drivetrain upgrade to transform the drive of any modified car

Three replacement uprated engine mounts for all 2.0 turbo Golf and A5-platform cars.

To harness your power increases, and transfer that power to the road or track where you need it, Volkswagen Racing Engine Mounts will give a much more solid drive, and crucially give additional durability.

VWR Engine, Transmission and Subframe Mounts are complete replacement units, designed to decrease engine and transmission movement to facilitate proper transfer of power to the road. By tightening up engine and transmission movement, drivers will instantly feel the differences the second they pull away.

    DEVELOPMENT

We developed our initial set of engine mounts for our first ever Golf 5 racing car in 2005, and after a few updates and revisions in that first year, we’ve been delighted with the result ever since.  The push-in-style polyeurethene mount upgrades that are sometimes offered in the aftermarket quickly failed in our use, leading us to the conclusion that the development of a complete replacement mount, re-engineered to deliver the performance that we needed.

So it’s an opportunity to have the true race parts on your road car with no compromises.

The VWR Engine Mounts are certainly not one of the most exciting or visual modifications that you can do to your car!  But they are truly one of the most worthwhile for anyone who appreciates the driving dynamics of their car.  Almost everyone who tries these mounts on a VAG A5-platform Golf or Scirocco wants them.

WHAT DO THE ENGINE MOUNTS DO?

The whole engine and gearbox is located in only three places.  One at engine-side plus another at the end of the gearbox which support the weight of the whole drivetrain, plus a third torque arm underneath the engine to contain the fore-aft movement (often called the pendulum or dog-bone mount).

The standard car uses very compliant rubber in these mounts to give a soft take-up of power and isolate the cabin from drivetrain noise.  For a daily driven standard car, these bushings do a good job of keeping cabin vibration to a minimum.  But when you ask more of these mounts, with higher power or hard driving, the flex in the bushes becomes very noticeable.  This gives a slightly loose feeling to the drivetrain and an increased chance of wheel-hop under hard acceleration as the whole engine and ‘box assembly judders.

If your car produces high power, or has covered quite a few road miles, or is driven hard, the softness of these three standard rubber mounts allows more and more movement as you come on and off the power. With worn mounts, we have even seen failures of the exhaust manifold and driveshafts as the whole drivetrain shifts around under load.

WHAT DIFFERENCE DO THE VWR MOUNTS MAKE?

The VWR engine mounts stiffen the whole location of the drivetrain greatly to give a much crisper feeling to your car.  This means no more jerky behaviour on and off the throttle or when you change gear, and all-but eliminates ‘wheel hop’ off the line.  Of course, a bit more noise from the drivetrain comes into the cabin, but most keen drivers love the sense that they are more ‘connected’ to their car.

As opposed to some aftermarket ‘push in’ bushes which crudely fill the voids in the factory mounts, the VWR units are completely redesigned replacement mount assemblies.  We specify a stiff urethane of 75A durometer which allows some movement within the mounts, and filters much of the drivetrain’s vibration but with a design that very significantly reduces the movement on each.

We spent a considerable time engineering these mounts for daily-driven vehicles and as such have developed a product that’s suitable for mild to heavily modified vehicles. Initially, we engineered our mounts for use in the Volkswagen Racing Cup and developed a solution great for race cars, but lacked refinement needed on the street. Vehicles developed for racing cars only differ heavily from those driven on the road, and as such requirements between both are often not directly shared. In our experience, many companies make the mistake of labeling extremely harsh and noisy engine, transmission and subframe mounts as performance products suitable for road use, but in doing so they heavily sacrifice the driving experience without increasing performance.

Our development underwent several updates and revisions before perfecting a balance between comfort and control. The subframe mount offers a significant reduction in movement experienced on and off throttle, between gear shifts and under acceleration. “Wheel Hop” is greatly minimized with this modification alone. This mount fully replaces the factory part, rather than other ‘upgraded mounts’ which simply provide small plastic or rubber inserts. The subframe mount alone is a perfect starting point for anyone looking to increase performance without adding much vibration or noise.

For most road cars, we’d recommend the lower engine mount on its own, leaving the two upper mounts standard. This makes a huge difference to how the car drives, and is a pretty minimal difference to the cabin refinement.  The lower engine mount on its own is one of our most popular upgrades for the VAG A5-platform Golfs, Sciroccos, A3, S3, Leon and Octavia.

For more heavily modified, track and motorsport cars, all three mounts should be upgraded.

    DID YOU KNOW…?

When Skoda UK build their land-speed record Octavia VRS, their 600+bhp 2.0 TSI engine needed some pretty special components to support an effort like this.  They fitted all three VWR mounts (along with a number of other parts sourced via VWR), and went on to secure their world land-speed record of 227mph.  Harnessing this sort of speed and power was no doubt one of the toughest tests that our mounts have been put to – but they kept the drivetrain in check throughout the life of the car, with no failures or replacement needed.

We can also confidently state that our mounts are the fastest 2.0 engine mounts in the world!
